What legitimate government hiring looks like
Information about federal, state, and local government job openings is published free of charge by the hiring agencies themselves. The Federal Trade Commission and the Office of Personnel Management have long warned the public about scams that try to profit from job seekers. Keep the following in mind:
- A real government employer will never ask you to pay a fee, deposit a check, or buy materials in order to apply, take a test, or be hired.
- Be cautious of any offer claiming "hidden" job openings, a guaranteed hiring outcome, or that "no experience is necessary."
- Be wary of any business name that implies it is part of the federal government, since real agencies do not operate that way.
- Never share your Social Security number, bank details, or payment information in response to an unsolicited job email or call.
- The single official source for federal job openings is USAJOBS.gov. If a listed federal opportunity does not also appear there, treat it with caution.
If you believe you have encountered a scam, you can report it to the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov or to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov.
